Josef Jakobs practiced dentistry until April 1932, when economic conditions forced he and his wife to close their practice. Josef became a traveling salesman in books and typewriters
In early 1933, Josef purchased Mexican security bonds with the aim of importing canned provisions from Spain. He was not permitted to import the provisions and the bonds were confiscated by the German Foreign Exchange authorities.
In early 1934, Josef and a friend went to Switzerland with the idea of selling counterfeit gold. That summer, Josef's wife came to visit him and they traveled around Switzerland and down to Rome. In the fall of 1934, Josef and his friend were arrested by the Swiss authorities for selling counterfeit gold. Josef was imprisoned and released in June 1937.
Upon his return to Berlin in the summer of 1937, Josef immediately got involved in a black market passport business. In the fall of 1938, he was arrested by the German authorities and imprisoned in Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp.
