Josef Jakobs was born June 30, 1898 in Luxembourg. His parents were Kaspar Jakobs and Emma Lück, both German. Josef had two sisters, Maria & Therese. In 1905 the family moved to Berlin where they lived in Wilmersdorf.
Kaspar was the director of a private school, often teaching students from South America. Josef attended the Dominican School in Vechta, near Oldenburg.
In 1914, at the outbreak of the war, Josef volunteered as a soldier. He was discharged due to ill health. In 1916 he rejoined the army. He fought along the Western Front and was wounded in April 1918 in France. He received the Iron Cross First Class.
After his convalescence, Josef studied dentistry in Berlin. Around 1920, Josef went to Argentina to continue his studies in dentistry. Around 1923, Josef returned to Berlin and in 1924 began to practice dentistryt in Germany.
